Today York’s cycle of Mystery Plays attract tourists from across the world. They are held to signify the origins of the theatre and to mark an important stage in British cultural history. However, the truth is rather different. They were conceived as a method of social control in a city wracked by revolt against noble and ecclesiastical rulers who feared the rising urban population.
