Paul Furness leading the ‘A Walk through Radical York’ tour in September 2012

With warm thanks to the Guardian Northerner editor Martin Wainwright, York’s Alternative History had a couple of blogs posted yesterday on the Guardian website. Paul Furness – starting with a stonking critique of York’s misrepresentation – introduced four of the stops from his ‘A Walk through Radical York’ held last September. I did one too – suggesting that York’s aspirations set out by the recent Fairness Commission (not least addressing the massive issue of housing in York) can only be achieved if the cultural politics of the city is taken on through a richer public understanding of York’s alternative histories and cultures.

We got a fantastic response from the Guardian Northern blogs and want, right now, to welcome anyone who’d like to join us or who’d like to write for our blog. Contact us via yorkalternativehistory@gmail.com and we’ll send you a blog invite. Next open meeting – all very welcome – will be Wednesday 13th February 2012, 7-9pm
Golden Ball, (2 Cromwell Road, Bishophill, York, YO1 6DU) but hope to see you this Saturday for York: Luddites 2013 too!
